Downeats is a journal that shares food stories and recipes, and photography. It is devoted to home cooking, gathering with loved ones, living slow and imperfectly. The name Downeats is a foodie play on the Downeast region of the coast of Maine- so everything is New England inspired.

What’s your preference: SAVORY OR SWEET? I’m What’s your preference: SAVORY OR SWEET?

I’m going through a savory phase right now, especially in the mornings. These biscuits are so yummy- one of my new favorites! I was inspired by @cannellevanille -she has a fennel and caramelized onion biscuit recipe that’s delicious and I made when I was (wrongly) diagnosed with celiac. So good!

I decided to swap out onions for shallots (because I love them, also that’s what I had on hand) and I toasted the fennel seeds. Also, unlike Aran’s, my biscuits are not gluten free. The biscuits are made with @mainegrains flour, @katesbutter , @gneissspice fennel seeds, and they are sprinkled with @slacktidemaine sea salt.

A must try! Link in bio if you want the recipe- I’m sending it out soon ☺️

Sundays Cake: Gingerbread. Do you subscribe to my Sundays Cake: Gingerbread. Do you subscribe to my Downeats recipes? Because this is a good one!

Perfectly seasonal, with an array of warming spices from my fave @gneissspice 🥰 this cake is perfect for breakfast or with a midday coffee. The kids love it as an after dinner treat. It’s light and sweet, with a good spicy molasses flavor. I also used @mainegrains flour, @katesbutter and @oakhurstdairy , so lots of local goodness 😊

✨In my dream cafe I serve this cake toasted hot, with a small scoop of cinnamon ice cream on top, drizzled with cajeta and sprinkled with smoked sea salt. If you’re not feeling so ambitious as all that, I’ve made a super basic vanilla glaze to top it with. It’s also really good with a sprinkle of powdered sugar or a dollop of freshly whipped cream.✨

After 30 some odd years I'm finally warming up to winter in Maine, but only because it's complimented by cozy things like warm blankets, hot cocoa, and soups like these. What's your favorite thing about winter? (Or, if you hate it, what's the only good thing about it??)

This soup is just as bright and creamy as it looks- made with fresh ginger + red miso. It's the perfect amount of sweet, salty, and warming spice. The recipe will be sent out to my email list tomorrow AM, so if you're not on the list click the link in my bio to sign up 😌

Me in my happy place = making food and being with Me in my happy place = making food and being with my kiddos. Did everyone have a good Thanksgiving?

I'm a sucker for the holiday season and all things mulled, toasty, and sugar dusted. For me the holiday season is about family, giving, and sharing delicious food, and I truly never tire of it. Also, who doesn’t like presents?! Since the kids were little I've tried to make a point to solidify traditions for them, and have found both pushback and success. Do you have a favorite family holiday tradition? ✨

With the end of the year fast approaching, it's hard not to look back on how this past year has been. How was your 2023? I’ve been contemplating the term “reinvention” for the past few months and it’s starting to resonate with me more and more. I haven’t thought too much about how, but part of me feels ready to shed an older coat of skin and step into something more.

More challenge in my work.
More business skills.
More photographs.
More boundaries.
More me time.
More clarity.
More joy.
More.

Happy (official) start of the holiday season! 🎄
